The authorstarted to sell newspapers when he was but eight yearsold and at twelve commenced manual labor in a callousing,laborious vocation, and though now past sixty-two he isfar from having any foot beseeching a grave. The author is as desirous as any one to prevent theyoung being injured by hard work; nevertheless, there isaltogether too much sentimentality fostered on this func-tion and by many who have had little experience to givethem any just conception of what is truly hard work. We occasionally have newspapers publish articles withbig headlines and frilled pictures showing some clerk,actor or rich mans son who is thought to have done agreat days work in shoveling coal, carrying pig iron, etc.,in which the reader is supposed to concede that these /)inerfC<L
